PROJECT

Project

Sustainable, environmentally friendly high-performance hybrid timber building construction is at the heart of the HiHTC project. In the near future timber buildings will form a much bigger part of the EU and international built environment. Timber buildings will be designed and constructed with sustainable, high-performance engineered timber components, but some amount of steel and concrete construction materials will remain to satisfy structural, fire prevention, moisture absorption and economic requirements. Combining wood, concrete and steel will provide sustainable solutions to building structures improve building performance and design. Also, the project promotes cultural diversity and shapes professional life and society, as work environments are increasingly involve internationally networking.

Architects and engineers have already started designing hybrid timber buildings. However, now higher education mostly focuses on steel and concrete buildings, and sometimes on low-rise timber buildings. In order to satisfy the needs of the employment market, it is necessary to prepare students with innovative applied skills in the area of design, construction and onsite construction management of high-performance hybrid timber buildings. To educate a new generation of students, it is necessary to develop and integrate an innovative multi-disciplinary BSc/BA study module.

Project aims to fulfill the future demands in higher education of students in sustainable, high-performance hybrid timber building construction by transnational and trans-disciplinary innovative student-centered learning approaches dealing with changes and solving innovative complex problems will promote and strengthen global learning.

Objectives:
– To develop and deliver new international trans-disciplinary module on sustainable, high-performance hybrid timber building construction, which meets the needs of the HEIs and
employment market representatives. An internationalized curriculum will enable the students participating in the project to develop global perspectives in global environmental issues
and think across cultures.
– To improve competencies of students/teachers in problem solving and team work, innovative thinking, motivation, awareness of cross-professional project input and project
management by using Project Based Learning (PBL), learning by doing and blended learning approaches.
– To educate all participants (students, teachers, entrepreneurs) in the field of the sustainable, high-performance hybrid timber building construction.
– To ensure open awareness of the project results to local, national, EU level and international target groups.

Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (UCBL), created from a merger in 1971, is a multidisciplinary university providing teaching for more than 47,000 students every year in the fields of sciences, technology, health, and sport. More than 10% are foreign students from 140 countries. About 10,000 students graduate each year. There are about 4,800 staff of which almost 2,800 teaching staff and faculty members and a budget of 421 million Euros (Annual Report 2018). With a constantly increasing number of students, UCBL developed internal resources in order to respond to the European objectives of inclusive universities.

Lyon 1 is focusing on both fundamental and applied research: it has 79 state-funded research units working in three main fields, health, environment and material technologies. A certain number of these units are the result of the association of several laboratories into research clusters. These collective structures have a much wider field of expertise and access to higher performance research tools. UCBL is ranked amon gth e10 first French universities on the Shangai ranking 2020 and 2nd in the Reuters ranking for innovation in 2019. It is the 2nd most important university regarding the number of patents filed in 2020.

The University Institute of Technology (IUT) created in 1967 is spread over 3 campuses : Villerubanne Doua, Villeurbanne Gratte-ciel and Bourg-en-Bresse. It has become one faculty of UCBL, and includes about 5500 students, 15 schools all specialised in Technolgy, Engineering, Science and Business, among which is the Civil engineering School. There about 38 lecturers and 400 students in Civil Engineering, all undergraduate, with a pratical approach of education. Some students can be apprentices on the final year of their study with partner companies. There are also 2 labs, one of them called LMC2 is specialised in hybrid concrete solutions for construction and involved in national and international construction projects.

NOVA University Lisbon (NOVA) – https://www.unl.pt/en – is a Portuguese public higher education institution with a mission to serve society through knowledge and education on a local, regional and global level. NOVA is committed to the development of the European HE and its courses are organised under the principles of the Bologna Agreement.

NOVA’s structure includes, apart from the Rectorate, five Faculties (NOVA School of Science & Technology, NOVA School of Social & Human Sciences, NOVA School of Business & Economics, NOVA School of Medical Sciences, NOVA School of Law), three Institutes (Tropical Medicine, Technology & Biochemistry, Information Management) and one School of Public Health. It offers several degrees (BSc, MSc, Integrated MSc, PhD level) and postgraduate courses, covering various fields of knowledge.

NOVA is the Portuguese university with the best performance in the Horizon 2020 (in terms of Full-Time Equivalent) and 87% of its 39 R&D Units have been rated Excellent or Very Good in recent evaluations.

There are around 20500 students at NOVA, 2000 academics, and 700 non-academic staff. NOVA’s governance system allows the Rector (and the Vice-Rectors) to meet directly with the Deans of the Faculties prior to the important strategic decisions, which is something unique in Portugal.

NOVA is among the 21 best European universities under 50 years old according to QS rankings and is the Portuguese Institution with the highest impact worldwide in terms of publications, according to Leiden Ranking.

NOVA is an active member of several university networks: UNICA, YERUN, EUA and CESAER.

NOVA has consolidated experience within European programs: Tempus, Erasmus+, ERC Grants, H2020. It is also actively involved in cooperation with American, African and Asian universities. These partnerships and programs are being successfully implemented with the participation of NOVA, strengthening and expanding the initiatives of joint degrees, and also of science and technology, innovation and competitiveness. This is done through international mobility exchange of both academics (professors and researchers) and students (undergraduate and graduate).

NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA) – https://www.fct.unl.pt/en – has 14 Departments: Civil Engineering, Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Materials Science, Conservation and Restoration, Applied Social Sciences, Earth Sciences, Science and Technology of Biomass, Life Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry. FCT NOVA implemented years ago a Curricular Profile with complementary skills to boost the professional integration of graduates, that has been adapted by other Portuguese HE institutions.

Staff from FCT NOVA Department of Civil Engineering directly participates in project activities. The department focuses its research on eco-efficiency of construction products, embodied energy of building materials, energy efficiency, indoor comfort and air quality, construction technology and pathology, structural design and retrofitting, management of construction projects. The Department delivers BSc, MSc and PhD study programmes on Civil Engineering, MSc study programs on Building Rehabilitation and on Facades Technology, postgraduation study programmes on Sustainable Construction and Rehabilitation and on Infrastructures Rehabilitation. It closely cooperates with Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering which carries out research namely on climate change, environmental declaration of products and materials, life cycle assessment and toxicity.
